Regular Weekly Assignments

Some regular assignments will be taking place each week. A lot of the assignments are done as independent work and completion may be done outside of the school day as homework. Please help your child’s success with this work and set a consistent time and place he/she will work on the assignments.

Weekly assignments are:
1. Spelling Contract
2. Literature Circle Reading Assignment and Job Sheet
3. Story of the Week
4. Journal Writing Entry (online)

The spelling contract is familiar with the kids and is assigned on Monday and is due the following Monday before the weekly test.

In the literature circles, kids assign their own reading assignment (pages they will read that week) and be responsible for completing one of the following six job sheets: Creative Connector, Passage Picker, Question Creator, Super Summarizer, Word Wizard, and Artful Artist. Jobs rotate around the group each week until they have finished their book.

“Story of the Week” is just that. Kids are required to write one story a week. This story will be assigned on Monday and due the following Monday. Stories may be free writing or an assigned topic regarding a prompt or writing trait we are learning.

Journal writing is done online and written to a prompt (question or statement that kids respond to). I will post the new prompt by Monday of each week. Kids are required to post a response by the following Monday. Kids can post at school or another place with online access by going to the website: http://monsonsquestionoftheweek.blogspot.com/ and logging on with the user name and password that was taught to them last week.
